In general, anything east of Las Vegas Blvd over to at least Maryland is at best ok, at worst pretty bad. If you are talking about UNLV, the immediate surrounding area is pretty much as I described it. The best parts of valley are the newer ones (duh!) west and south of the Strip and the airport, particularly Summerlin to the NW, Green Valley to the SE and Southern Highlands to the south.

READ THIS AGAIN. I CHANGED IT. North Las Vegas is the fasting growing city in the country. That's really just Northwest Las Vegas, but we're growing so much, they made it an actual new city. Everything there is brand new. Good school district, not as expensive as "Summerlin," which is farther west, but all new, great schools, but a little more $$. Think Northwest. :) I just re-read your question. If you're talking about UNLV for yourself. I think you'd be better off on the east side, near UNLV. You could get a nice 1bdr apt.for $700-800 a month. And everything is around there. (Supermarkets, malls ,etc.) At first I thought you were talking about school for your kids. Good luck. This is a great place to live! Great party town or not. :)

East is... eh. Henderson and Summerlin are both WAY overrated and the schools there are full of really stuck-up rich kids. But you know, if you go for that kind of thing. But the NW and NE have some very good schools (if you want to look up individual schools or where they are or whatever, some good ones are Shadow Ridge, Arbor View, Centennial, Palo Verde, Green Valley, Coronado). Any newer areas, you'll be doing pretty well. From www.ccsd.net/schools, you can get to all the zoning information and individual school websites.

East Las Vegas isn't the best - try Northwest, West, Southwest, or Henderson.

Everything except east, really. My favorite area is Summerlin even though it's 10 miles away or so (from UNLV) it's not a "far" commute. I go to UNLV and travel it everyday. People complain about traffic but L.V doesn't really have traffic outside of the strip. To answer your question, Summerlin is the nicest in my opinion BUT L.V has alot of nice areas. Maryland, East Decatur you want to avoid, when in doubt get about 4 miles away from the strip heading towards summerlin or Henderson and you will be good.

it depends on what you're looking for. A good friend of mine had a house built out in Summerlin, back in the 90's, but now more people are moving and the people are lazier in maintaing their property, so the value is going down. If you invest in property, you want it to increase not decrease.
