I believe it's up to the person. I don't think that anyone should really kill themselves, and they should try to seek help. But it's not my place or really anyone else's to tell them that they can't commit it. I know suicide causes a lot of pain and guilt on the family and I can understand that. Still though if the person is too afraid to ask for help, and the family doesn't see any signs, then its their choice if they want to commit it. It is a free country, and I don't believe anyone should tell another that they can't kill themselves.

What if it was a person who lived in a third world country, in a place where his/her people were getting killed all the time, and they knew that they were always going to be poor, and probably killed soon? Would you blame them for being selfish if they decided to kill themselves, before someone else did? I know I wouldn't. I know there's ways to keep someone from committing it, but you can't always prevent it.

When you think about it, look at all of the pressures that are put on people daily. It is hard to live sometimes, with all of the stress and "just having to FIT in". The last ones just ridiculous. Thats the main cause of girls getting eating disorders, and that is/can be a factor to lead people to commit suicide.

I'm against it, because most people would believe that killing yourself is the only way out, and that if you do get rid of yourself, you're giving everyone a break from yourself. I think with this, it's giving a confusion to the suicidal ones, because loneliness, I think, is the main reason why we kill ourselves. Maybe because we think that no one cares, and that if we go die, no one would notice...but I don't know about never killing myself. Sometimes I think about that. I'm against it, but I have those days when you just want to get away from everything, mostly life.

Against. It is against the law of my church and it really hurts those left behind. The friends and family left wondering for the rest of their life is that anything that they could have said or done to prevent the suicide. It is a very, very selfish act.

Very few people will be in favor of plain old suicide as a way to avoid mental anguish.

However, I personally support "assisted suicide" for terminally ill people who fit the strict standards that Dr. Kevorkian required, which basically accepted only people in severe pain, who were not able to eat, or were in danger of choking to death on their own saliva, etc., etc.

Suicide is the coward's way out. It's the most selfish thing a person can do. They end their life and the people who love them are left to literally clean the mess that person left behind. The people who love them are left with unanswered questions, needless amounts of guilt for 'not having done something to prevent it', and emotional damage if they're who found the body. Nothing can be so bad that you have to take your own life. It's also a sin.

Hey, you asked for opinions, so be prepared...

Suicide (n) To kill oneself out of spite or an insecure feel.
That is what suicide means. I wouldn't do suicide ever. I'd rather die from natural causes or some form of other death. I would never do suicide. Just ending ones own life is just horrible. Think of causing your own death by your own hands.

I'm with Guru. I've been close to suicide. When you get to that point you honestly believe there's just no other way and no help coming. There have been a lot of suicides of sexually abused children. Are they selfish cowards?

Wanting or forcing someone to live, who doesn't want to, is selfish.

I believe in freedom and autonomy. We have a right to live and a right to die. I believe that each person should have the freedom to make the choice for themselves.

I have no right to ask someone to suffer, regardless of what that suffering is to alleviate any emotions that I might have. How selfish is that? Religion has so warped many people, that the suffering then gets passed into society.

As for those left behind -- suck it up.
