one acre is 10 square chains

10 x 22 x 22 = 4840 square yards

39 x 39 square inches per sq yard = 7,361,640 cubic inches

16.39 grams per cubic inch. about 120 tonnes

Sorry about mixing imperial and metric but I'm of the age that learnt both.

An acre = 4840 yd^2

so volume of water = 4840*9(ft^2 )*144(in^2)*1(depth)=6272640 in^3. I'll convert to metric and back again because I can't remember the weight of 1 in^3 of water
6272640*2.54*2.54*2.54/1000kg = 10279.015kg = 10 1/4 tonnes which is pretty darned near the same in imperial, so say 10 tons

101 imperial tons

I'll do it in metric since I find it easier:

1 acre = 4047 m^2

1 inch = 0.0254m

So volume of water is

V = 4047 * 0.0254 m^3
= 102.794 m^3
= 102 794 liters

1 liter of water weighs 1 kg. So mass is

M = 102 794kg

in ton that's

101 imperial tons (113 short tons)

One acre is 43,560 square feet. Covered to the depth of 1 inch that is:

43,560/12 = 3630 cubic feet

The weight of water varies by temperature. It weighs:

Weight: 62.416 pounds per cubic foot at 32°F
Weight: 61.998 pounds per cubic foot at 100°F

http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/waterproperties.html

Let's select 62 pounds per cubic foot.

The weight of the water is:

(62 lbs/ft³) * (3,630 ft³) = 225,060 lbs = 112.53 tons

That's false. Blatantly so. At sea level, that much water, that much water (3,630 cubic feet) would weigh 113.080135 tons, approximately.

State the gravitational field strength. On somewhere like Jupiter, the water would weigh more.

43560 ft² = 1 acre.

43560 x 0.083in/ft = 3615.5 ft³
3615.5 x 7.5 (US) gal/ft³ x 8.3 lbs/gal = 225,065 lbs.
225,065lbs ÷ 2,200 lbs/metric ton = 102 metric tons.
225,065lbs ÷ 2,000 lbs/short ton = 112.5 short (US) tons.

3615.5 x 6.24 (UK) gal/ft³ x 10 lbs/gal = 225,607 lbs
225,607 ÷ 2240 lbs/ton = 100.72 Imperial (UK) tons.

(1 acre)(43,560ft^2/1acre) (1in) (1ft/12in)
(62.43pounds/1ft^3) (1ton/2000pounds) = [ 113.31 tons ]
