The Supreme Court today had a 5-4 vote basically saying that race shouldn't be a factor in getting into schools, merit should. Is it time we do away with Afirmative action? and does it help or hurt minorities?

To me its a class thing, Im part of the working poor but not low class like alot of poor people. I moved to upper class neighborhoods and spend all my money on my mortgage or rent just so that I can live in peace and so that my kids can go to peacefull schools. I did this in the valley of Lost Angeles and they bused in 3 bus loads of mexican kids to my sons school. He was constantly pressured and asked what set or gang he was from. So yes, I am against affirmative action in the schools.

Oh and Im a minority..Im black

I agree that economic status and not race should be used as a factor into admissions. As a black female, I have seen the system used appropriately, but I have also heard of it being horribly abused. I believe affirmative action was sorely needed a few decades ago where schools refused to admit any minority, even those with higher merits than the admitted. However, a great deal of schools now recognize merit and would probably not even put a race block on admissions applications if it weren't for AA. Nowadays, the point of affirmative action should be to let economically disadvantaged minorities have an opportunity at higher education, given the higher percentage of middle- and upper-class blacks. What is the incentive in trying to gain admission based on merit when a wealthy black teenager knows he or she can get into the school of his or her dreams just because of a skin color quota? I hope that the Supreme Court takes into consideration the opportunity to make the switch from ethnicity to economics.

No it should not and even some black politicians agree with me on this. As long as a group of people gets special treatment then they will be a minority and separated in some fashion from society. By getting this special treatment they will seem to have a preferred status and so a reason for other people to not like them.

Schools fought, but now like the idea of Affirmative Action. It allows schools to get a wide diversity of students, not the simple majority of society. In the past this was a good idea, but now day’s minorities are reaching the same population figures as the former white majority; economically though there is still a major problem with black children getting the rough end of the stick.

It is time to change affirmative action from RACIAL conditions to ECONOMIC conditions. I am all in favor of allowing those from lower economic conditions the chance to go to college. This includes white, black, brown etc. Of course currently that means that a lot of minority children, especially blacks will get more chances to be admitted to college, but isn't that the entire idea behind affirmative action.

Why are they even asking a question like this in the first place?? That just shows that they really don't want diversity (or are trying to hide that fact). Its pitiful.. when is this country going to get over the whole race thing and stop looking on the outside and judging people by their color? *rollz eyes* its getting irritating and annoying, and just rediculus. I thought this country was a melting pot. Is it?? Or do they even want it to be. Why does COLOR out of all things have to be a factor whether someone gets into school or not?

What kind of question is that? Honestly!

Race shouldn't be a factor in getting into school. I'm a minority. Actually I'm a minority minority so this can only help me. I made a 3.3 grade point average and got into the school I wanted to.

It should not be factored in at all on either level. Admission to schools should be based on intelligence and commitment to extracurriculars/community service. Race should not factor in.

No. Equal means equal. Affirmative action programs should be abolished.

no i think that races should be accepted. The intelligence is what matters not what race the person is or where they are from.
