He just fell from a small step ladder and knocked his mouth so hard that his teeth kinda broke through the skin on the front of his face! I was sitting right there watching him, and he really didn't fall hard...he just hit his mouth just right (or wrong). He just cried a little bit, and then I put him down because it was his nap time anyhow. He's sleeping sooo hard, so I got to thinking...what if he got a concussion? Can you get a concussion from hitting your mouth? Should I wake him up? We have a dinner party tonight and I sooo want him to be all caught up on his sleep. I know if I wake him up, he won't go back down. He's 15 months.

It's an urban legend that you must keep someone awake if they suffer a concussion. That theory is about people slipping into comas when they fall asleep. This rarely, RARELY, happens.

Plus, kids are pretty resilient at that young of age but if the injuries look bad...taken him to a hospital.

I think you are right to be wondering about letting him sleep. You can get a concussion from hitting your mouth, but in very young children, the bones are so much softer and the bone mass is so small, that it takes tremendous force to cause a concussion by hitting the jaw. Even though there's a remote chance of a serious head injury, why take the chance by letting him sleep? If he shows any signs like loss of balance; inability to focus his eyes or track a moving object; loss of appetite; or nausea, you should get him to a doctor right away. If no signs of head injury are present you can wake him for few minutes every 30-45 minutes as a precaution.

You need to keep an eye on him. Use a flashlight and check his pupil response, if it is slow or uneven it means trouble. Bring him to the doctor immediately if you have any concern. Bleeds on the brain can cause serious damage and you will not see any symptoms while he is asleep.

You need to take him to the minor care room at the ER it sounds.

Yes, wake him up, and do it now.....he may not like it, but it's the best way for you to see if he's responsive and alert.

If you have any doubt if things are okay, please go see your doctor, or go to the ER, better go once too often, than once too late!!!!!!!

Good luck.
