Basically we have a desktop pc with the homehub connected to it, two laptops and 2 other desktops which run off the wireless signal. one laptop and both desktops can still connect to the Internet, however one of the laptops stopped earlier on.
I think it was because I uninstalled Norton Antivirus because it was out of date and wouldn't scan anymore, and set up the windows firewall. (Since I restarted tyhe computer, I have only been able to achieve limited connectivity, and so I cannot surf the Internet or use MSN etc..)
When troubleshooting the MSN connection, it says there is a problem with the default gateway (or something along those lines..)
Does anyone know how I could perhaps sort this out?

I've tried restarting the homehub thing but nothing there, nor does turning on and off the wireless on my laptop work. Any help would be excellent thanks!

(I'm currently writing this on the main desktop)

The laptop is using Vista Basic (wish it was running XP but oh well..it's the new one).

And also I've checked the button, wireless is definately on lol.

I'll turn off windows firewall in a second and see what happens..

From your description it looks like the wired connections are functioning and the wireless connections are not.

Log onto the router using a wired connection. Check the wireless settings, make sure they are correct. Note all security applications you have enabled. Go back to the wireless pcs and make sure they have the same settings on them and all should work.

From the wireless pc, after you have completed checking the configurations, open command prompt (start - run, type in cmd) and type in "ipconfig" without the quotes. You should be given an IP address (192.168.x.y format where x = 1 or 0 in most cases, y = any number between 2 and 255). If you do not get this, recheck your config as there is a problem with the wireless config either on router or on the pc's wireless port.

Assuming you get a lan IP response, then type in "ping 4.2.2.2" and hit enter. You shoud receive 4 successful responses; then type in "ping yahoo.com" and hit enter. You should receive 4 successful responses. If this happens you have internet access. If your browser does not provide web pages, you have a firewall blocking it.

There are several ways Method 1 - Right click on the connection Icon near the clock and pick View Available networks, then click on the connection and hit the Disconnect button. Method 2 - Turn off that laptop Method 3 - If you do not have access to that laptop and you are trying to disconnect your Brother... or something LAME like that, then reprogram the router to use a different Wireless Security code. Good luck and Happy Computing!

Check that your HUB login isnt the defaulr password, if it is, change it.

Check that the WEP key you have is strong enough, if you look on line, you can find WEP key generators that will generate a valid WEP128 bit key for you that you will need to use in the wireless settings and in the hub.

Check the wireless connection in the laptop, if you have diagnostic software, try and see if you can pinpoint the problem.

I had a problem getting a connection until I change the default channel to one that had fewer people on it.

I cant think of anymore issues that can cause a problem...

Once I couldn't connect to the Internet wireless with my laptop because while everything was enabled with the Intel Proset software that came with my computer, there was a key on my keyboard I had hit that had disabled the wireless hardware in my laptop a different way.

I has somehow hit the blue "function" key along with the F2 key on my laptop, which somehow disabled the hardware itself.

Hopefully that helps, or someone with far more wireless network experience than me responds.

I've had this before with Windows XP and the BT Home Hub what I did is made sure I didn't use BT's own software for connecting to the hub and Im unsure wheather Vista has the wirelesss connection window. If it does go to it and find the hub and enter the ssid and wifi code again.

Do you have windows XP SP2?? if not forget everything and get that first

1) start control panel firewall dissable windows firewall.

this will resolve that being an issue.

2) i know you want wireless thats great. first plug it in with a wire. does it go to the internet with a wire? this will tell you if your waisting your time looking at wireless if its something else.

if you can plug in and get internet then goto windows update and download all updates (this will get you sp2 if you dont have it)

if none of the above solve the issue repost with the new details.

:)

Hi sorry to hear of your problems, i was having the same problems with my BT homehub although i had sp2 installed i was using belkin wireless adapters which were conflicting with my Homehub, Upon advice from BT i then went and purchased a BT Voyager wireless adaptor as my belkin was always dropping the connection or i got a yellow triangle saying limited or no connection. Upon getting my BT Voyager adaptor i have had no problems whatsoever at first i thought this was a gimick by BT to get me their products but upon help from my mate pete who sets up wireless he even told me the same a lot of adaptors conflict with bt homehubs. now i have bt adaptor had no problems since and it £24.99 from argos money well spent hope this helps you and good luck, if you cant get it sorted give me a full detailed account of whats happening with an email address and i will ask my mate to print me instructions scan them and email to you my email is dale.andrews11@btinternet.com good luck.

I had a similar problem.

have you tried connecting to anyone else's wireless router? For example, going around a friend's house, or super legally pinching someone's internet?

If that works, then it's not the laptop.

If it's the home hub, call BT. They'll sort you out, they're good boys. =)

(And girls, for political correctness.)
