I believe that my laptop keeps automatically shutting itself down because it is heating up too quickly. So to prevent this in the future, what is a suitable surface to leave it on (where it won't heat up as easily) ?

Chances are it's not the surface. You Laptop is probably dirty. The heat exchanger gets clogged with lint, dust and fibers and then the processor overheats shutting down your computer. If this overheating problem happens over an extended period of time it will cause the thermal compound between the Heat Sink and the processor to cook away. This leaves an air gap between the processor and heat sink and will lead to worse overheating. The thermal compound will then need to be replaced. If you are uncomfortable opening your laptop find a good tech to do it for you.

Good Luck.
