There are coins called "box coins" they were hollowed out and the two halves put back together. They were used in the 1700-1800 and maybe even before, to carry messages, the notes were placed inside. Silver dollars were used as well as large silver coins called Thalers of the German city states.

By using certain sized coins and the way you group certains coins and space them out.
