You confront this person in front of the person they lied to. That way, they've got to acknowledge it and the person they lied to will get to know the truth.

Not enough info for a complete answer, however, as a general rule when dealing with adults...confront them in a public setting and demand their proof. It's amazing how quickly the liars will back down when a calm, rational approach is used. This serves to stop their mouth from flapping and also shows those around that they are not to be trusted. Chances are, the others already know. Do not lose your temper, put the onus on that person to prove their accusations. I've done it a few times, including within my own family. (not immediate, in law, niece and a nephew)

You have to let them know that you know what's going on. If you can confront them in a peaceful way, that's the best way to do it. If you are not comfortable with that, then type out an anonymous note to them and let them know that you intend to protect your friend and won't allow them to spread any more lies. Whatever you do, don't get in a huge fight. It'll accomplish nothing. But let them know that not only do you know what's going on, but so does everyone else.

I have an adult step daughter who had told a lot of lies about me and my husband and at first I tried to defend myself and my husband but it only resulted in arguments with her which she was enjoying. It may have been negative attention but it was attention for her just the same. She was enjoying knowing she had me upset with the lies she was telling. I stopped trying to defend myself and my husband and just didn't worry about it anymore and things have settled down. I also changed my number so she can't harrass me anymore. I changed my attitude about it and I feel so much less stress! Those who are believing her lies without asking me about it don't matter to me anyway.

Confront them on it and call them out. Then let them know that you need trustworthy people in your life and it's a sad thing but you can't continue a relationship with them. Don't waste anymore time on someone that has to lie to you. Dump all the BS

if they are telling really hurtful lies, then tell them directly to cut it out, but if it's just little things to get under your skin, then do your best to forget about it.
