Because there is an essential truth in the story that is as true today as it was hundreds of years ago. Plus, they have no suggested that there are only 16 basic plots in every story, in every culture, throughout all time. 16! That's it. The people or the time or place may change, but the stories are all the same.

Classic stories, like fairy tales, have an excellent moral message in diguise. Take Pinochio..........how to learn how to become a good boy? After many pitfals he learns and he changes from a puppet into a real loving boy for Gepetto..who never had a real son to love......A classic story is timeless because it delivers a lesson that is valid for any age, past or future.

depends on the story. it's history. if it was worth remembering and passing on and on, chances are that it impacted a great deal of people or maybe even just one person. the point is that it had an impact. it was memorable and should be passed on for that reason alone.
