If it's loose, it will either show lower or not at all. If it's broke, then it won't read. If it has a kink in it then the needle will bounce around some and not be steady.

If you are having trouble, it is not hard to replace. good luck.

You never did state what year and model your car is. If your car is an older vehicle and actually has a speedometer cable then it is gear driven. On the output shaft of your transmission there is a gear that turns the gear connected to the end of your speedo cable. Those gears have to match and there are alot of different gears out there. If you just had your transmission replaced those gears might be different. the only way to get the right one is to count the splines on each gear and make sure the length are the same. When speedo gears get wore out you will see your speedo needle on your dash jump around sometimes also. If you have a newer vehicle and there is just wire connected to your transmission then your transmission has a sensor instead of gears and a cable. If they go bad your speedometer won't work at all period. If you got different size tires/wheels bigger or smaller that would even have an effect on the way your speedometer reads. An don't let that guy fool you some speedometer cable are a breeze to swap out and some can be a total _______ you know what.

The cord is actually a square cable inside the jacket, and if it's loose, it will just show random speeds, as the cable moves in and out of the gear, you can just tighten it by hand or with some pliers in a clock-ward motion.

If the cable was broke, you would have no speedometer at all.
It drives a gear, and without the wire, no gears turn.

No and no. You could also tell us the type of vehicle. some of them have qwirks. Sounds like your speedo is" bouncing" , but should not read faster than you are going.
