Why do people dislike the local bands when they are signed into the major labels and sell lots of records? They brand those bands as sell-outs and diss them at every oppurtunity? Why? Shouldn't they instead be happy for them?

Prof. Anger is right

It's not that a local band gets a major label that makes them a sell-out.

ANY band can become a sell-out by compromising their sound because of MONEY. If they change their sound for other reasons then its different.

Also if they choose to sponsor a bunch of products it can be seen as a sell-out but personally i think being a sell out only applies IF A BAND COMPROMISES THEIR SOUND OR IMAGE PURELY FOR PROFIT

A band that signs to a major label isn't automatically a sell out. It's when a band comromises their sound solely to sell records. The best example of this, as much as I hate to say it, is Liz Phair. When she came out with that record a couple years ago with that song "Why Can't I" it was clearly because she wanted to break out and start making more money. She even said so herself if I remember correctly. Tell you the truth it's one case where I am happy for her. She had done the whole underground indie thing for so long and hadn't really gotten anywhere. That and I imagine she did it cynically. Man, I hate that song.
It's the compromise that is the issue though. For instance, listen to Exile in Guyville or Whip Smart and then listen to the Liz Phair album where she is naked with the guitar and you'll see the compromise. It's a plain as day example.

Not all bands sell out. Pearl Jam have been going for some years now. They are doing incredibly well for themselves but they have not sold out. So they are a perfect example of how bands can stay true to their fans.

I think you're partially right, though - about being happy for them - if they are the kind of band who wants to make lot's of money.

It applied with the bands from the 60s and 70s where they would preach minimal living and rebels (against "The man") and then sign with a major label at the drop of a hat. those not practicing what they preached were sell outs.

I totally agree with you.
I absolutely hate when people call bands sellouts. The way they call band sellouts... I would say we're all fcking sell outs then. Because to ignorant people... Selling out is the same thing as success.

Anyways, I hate how people want to hold on to their little indie bands forever, hoping that they will never be MTVed out. You know what? That's the same thing as wishing that they don't have any success in their lives! They need money too!!! And if they deserve the attention because they are good.... Then so be it.

One of my favorite bands, Paramore, who was relatively unknown to most people I know (even though I knew about them before they came out with their first album, All We Know Is Falling), went on MTV and people were already crying sell outs! Ridiculous. Hayley Williams (the band's lead singer) had to write a note and say that the band's not going to forget where they came from and who they started with. I mean, this band is already so humble.. how dare people call them sell outs.

That said, I agree with you.
Just try to ignore those fake, bandwagon fans who call our favorite bands (who are not sell outs) sell outs.

P.S.
A Perfect band that is the OPPOSITE of sellouts is The Format.
They're giving away their entire album, "dog problems" on their website theformat.com because it's their 1 year anniversary of the album =). They do it because they love the fans!

Because they will play what they know will sell records, not what they really want to play

As long as a band stays true to what they know theyre good at, then theyre not a sell out

Some people are just jealous that their favorite band is gaining more fans and they're not one of the select few that like them anymore. It's pretty sad, but that's their business.

Sell out is usually when they change there music. Like Nickelback used to be pretty hard core now they have all this sappy blah cr*p b/c it sells and they play it on everystation even the one my grandma listens too. that is a sell out.

I think the problem most people have is the very real possibility of their band dumbing down & watering down their sound to suit a wider audience. (ie: sell more)

This move usually leaves the original fans behind.
