I find it interesting--that despite this latest defeat--Bush still thinks that amnesty for illegal immigrants is "the top of many Americans' minds"--as he puts it.

I personally believe that this is just another example of a waning 'lame duck' administration--whose twilight days have come and gone.

True. But wasn't the "immigration reform" idea mostly the brainchild of one George W. Bush?

I agree with you except for one point. The failure of the immigration bill was not proof that George Jr. is a lame duck, but proof that he is actually Dick Cheney's puppet.

Bush will go down in history as one of the most powerful Presidents, and one of the most unpopular. This is fine with Dick Cheney, his true master. If you look at the Scooter Libby case and Cheney's recent claim that he is immune form Congress you will see him flexing his muscles without using his puppet.

The Texas Constitution was re-written after the Civil War and the issue of Carpet Baggers was a big problem. The Federal Government required that all Southern States rewrite their constitutions, and that officers who fought with the South were unable to hold political office. This left the most important offices open to Northerners who came South to take advantage of the situation. Thus the true power in Texas is not in the hands of the Governor it is in the hands of the Lieutenant Governor. The reason why Rick Perry is so powerful now is that he is both. For a long time the Lieutenant Governors ran the state behind the scenes. So George W. Bush is used to such a situation. He has no problem delegating authority or being told what to do by the real power behind the throne.

This one doesn't hurt, or help him, in any way. He knew it wouldn't pass. He knows the whole immigration issue is a double-edged sword, anyways. The saps who voted him in are the ones who really want stricter immigration laws, as they see the low-wage workers as a drain on state and federal programs. But, most of his rich buddies benefit from the endless supply of cheap (near slave) labor. Keeping them illegal and scared keeps them *manageable*.

Americans feel they are above doing the menial jobs that these immigrants are more than happy to do. Who do you think is going to wash your car, or cut your lawn, or 'Biggie Size' your next meal if they really decide to get tough on immigration?

He is trying his hardest to put it at the top of everyone's minds so just maybe we'll forget there's a war going on. As far as Im concerned, if you want to stay in the country, fine. Learn english, pay taxes and serve time in the military. I have no problem with anybody.

I think it is more reflective of a Congress that is incapable of doing anything on any issue. Inability to compromise on anything is leading to nothing changing and the status quo is unacceptable on just about every major issue facing this country.

No I think we have seen all of his weaknesses already.

Bush is trying to create a positive legacy for himself that makes up for the war. He doesn't want to be known only as the President that went to war.
But, that is what we will remember him for.
