what if gandalf and co had:
1. First, hidden the ring.
2. Allowed Sauron to invade Gondor and Rohan.
3.. Then carried on a ruthless guerilla war until Sauron finally gave up the struggle against the pesky elf insurgents?

1. The ring was hidden to begin with and eventually found. The war still would have happened, just not in their lifetimes. Elrond talks about this during the counsil of Elrond in the book. Something to the effect of it is up to us to take care of the present situation to ensure security of future generations.
2. Had sauron invaded (unchallenged, as he DID invade gondor) the world of men would have fallen and gradually the rest of the world would have fallen as well.
3. Elves wouldn't have been the insurgents, they didn't care enough about the outcome of the war (either way they lost). But I think orcs would have had the upper hand in guerilla warfare.

1) the ring always gets itself found
2) both gondor and rohan had been invaded, technically
3) once the ring gets found, game over. the elves would have left middle earth if the ring had not been destroyed leaving nobody left afterfall of rohan or gondor but the woses, the hobbits, tom bombadil, the ents, and the dwarves. not good odds

Sauron wouldn't have given up, he just would have kept on ravaging the land the feed more troops to eventually find the ring wherever it was.
