You are envious for something that you don't have.
You are jealous when something you have is 'taken' or 'tempted away' from you.

When a friend of yours meets their perfect someone you are envious. When a friend of yours flirt with your perfect someone, you are jealous.

When your baby brother (or sister) gets a new bike you are envious.
When your parents bring home a new baby you are jealous.

I think that jealous and envious are the same thing but apply to diffrent types of it...Like usually jealous people are jealous of other peoples girlfriends, boyfriends, while envious is usually more like money, and power, and the like.

I think to envy someone can mean that you look at them in awe because of what they have or do or look like and you would like to be like them or have the things they do. It doesn't have to be in a bad way. Jealousy is a negative trait that can sometimes be very vicious and people act out when they are jealous of someone. Jealousy can almost make you feel mad at someone who has the things or the life that you would like to have.

I think, as Vanhammer says. (My maiden name was Hammer!) Jealous is an anger and only tear ourselves down. Envious may lead to emulation of their best qualities which may bring out our own. That's the best avenue, as each of us is unique and can add a new shade of positive difference in the world if we develop our own qualities the best that we can!!

there really is no difference except i think of envious as more of a hateful trait and i usually think of someone who is envious wanting revenge when people who are jealous are more subtle about it

My mom always told me Jealousy is when you want to physical harm someone, and being Envious is wanting to either be or have something someone else has.

I believe JEALOUSY comes from the HEART. I believe being ENVIOUS comes from the HEAD.

jealousy is more of a childish, short term, less malevolant thing, while envy is a trait of someone who is jealous all the time- plus it's got a more nefarious feel to it.

I think they generally mean the same thing.

Like smile and grin, they basically mean the same thing, they're just different ways of describing it.
