You and your roommate should reach a basic understanding pretty early on. Most disagreements are about failing to show one another common courtesy, like keeping noise down when the other is sleeping or studying, not borrowing anything without permission, limiting your mess (or your cleanliness fetish) to your half of the room, or breaking the dorm's or college's rules (whether it's having girls in where it's not allowed, or drinking, doing drugs, downloading movies, whatever) and putting you both at risk.

Of course, a bad roommate will agree not to be a jerk, and will go ahead when and if it suits him. He'll also lock you out in just a towel, when he said you didn't need your key because he wasn't going anywhere.

Whether you can entertain women in your room depends on the school and sometimes on which dorm you're in. Every college whose policies I happen to know allows it, although some do not allow overnight guests.

Dorm roommates. Either the best friend in the world or your worst enemy. Usually, not too much in between. The worst kind of roommate is the one that is opposite of you. It can be bad. Of course, if you get with someone who is at least kind of like you then it can be pretty good. You will get on each other's nerves a few times, especially when finals are going on, but other than that, things will be good.

Girls in dorm room? That depends. There are coed dorms where guys and girls can be across the hall from each other. In those, it is very common to find girls in guys rooms. Some all guy dorms do not allow girls to live there, but they can visit. The rules will be different from dorm to dorm. Some are very strict and will not allow students of the female variety to enter the rooms at all. It boils down to what dorm you are in.
