"Indie" comes from independent. As in bands unsigned or signed to an independent label. Even bands signed to a major recording label can still be concidered indie, as long as they stay true to the music they played before being famous.
if you want indie, a good thing to do is search myspace music and find a band that's unsigned with agood fan base, so you know the music's good.
Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen bands are pretty good too.
Also go to www.myspace.com/scarletgrey.
Listen to some of they're music, and if you have myspace, message them. They actually reply. [say katyGREY recomended them]
You won't regret it.

Indie labels are knowns as independent labels. Indie artists are usually not signed at all or they are on an independent record label. It means they are not on MTV or the radio or signed to big record labels. There are some great indie bands out there and some do become mainstream!

Indie is the British term for alternative, derived from the word 'Independent' as in independent labels because they were not mainstream.
Bands like Blur, Muse, Oasis, but now these bands are considered mainstream already
