how do you make them your fans?

they make themselves my fans
If you see a person you want to add click on their picture(avatar) to go to their profile and under their name you will see a green plus sign and the words "add to my contacts". Then click on it and you will be their fan. They can do the same for you if they are interested. Many add contacts or (fans) because they want to be able to find the person again because they liked their answers or questions.

I have twenty-something fans; they become your fans if they add you as a contact.

I thought as long as you make someone your contact they become your fan.

I have fans and contacts. Sometimes people will just add you or whatnot. It depends on whether or not they like your questions and answers. Just be yourself and you'll do just fine.
