there are 6 wires on a silver thing about the size of a drinking flask with 3 4 pronged connectors and that is where the one wire is loose. I have a picture but I don't know how to get it on here. Any ideas?

the silver thing is the capacitor ...it should have some abbreviations around the top of this that sat F or fan C or common H or herm...the wire you are talking about is the wire that would go to the f or fan set of connectors..this should be one of two outside groups of connectors but there shouldn't be any other wire there but that tan wire with a white stripe....the wire should have a metal thing on the end of it that would slide down over the connector of the capaitor...be sure and turn the power off before you try to reconnect this....

You will need the wiring diagram from the maker. Often these are affixed to the unit inside so weather will not destroy them. It will show you where it goes. Wiring diagrams will indicate wire color and components they connect to. Take time to read this carefully. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT POWER TO THE UNIT or you can kill yourself and others because there is no protection from high voltage exposure when you are working on it with covers off.

The drinking flask sized sliver thing is most likely a capacitor.
