The four humors were originally used by the Greeks both for medical purposes and to determine people's personalities. When the four humors were in balance, a person was healthy. If they were lacking or had too much of a particular humor, certain diseases would result. The four humors (bodily fluids) were yellow bile, black bile, phlegm, and blood. A short tempered person was a sign of too much yellow bile (the "choleric" personality). Black bile was a "melancholy" personality (sad, depressed, despondent). Phlegm was for calm, unemotional personalities (the "phlegmatic) and blood was for sanguines (very outgoing, social, "hot blooded" personalities). Your personality helped determine where the imbalance of humor lay.

Humour has always been around. even before humans, apes and monkeys especially have shown an ability to communicate their pleasure at events, and even seem to show the ability to use practical jokes (search the web for many examples).
