The D drive is just a second file system on your computer or it is a CD/DVD drive. I'll guess that you aren't asking about a CD/DVD drive as that would be pretty obvious why it is there.
Generally the C drive is your primary file system where the operating system resides. I say generally because it can be installed to another letter but most people never do that.
Reasons to have a D drive include:
- Older computer that doesn't support large file systems (think the cut off was 137 GB) but has a disk that is larger (example a 250 GB disk in an older system would essentially have thrown away almost half the space if not split into two file systems).
- D drive setup to use as a data disk separate from the operating system disk. This simplifies backing up the system and potentially keeps data around if you have to restore your computer or reinstall the OS.
The D drive can be a portion of a disk (one disk split into a C and D drive) or it can be another physical disk (two disk, one as C drive, second disk as D drive).

To be honest, your D drive is usually one of three things:
1. Its either another Hard Drive installed on your computer
2. Its another partition of your c drive (to be explained)
3. Its your CD rom drive.
To explain:
1. Your computer could have two hard drives installed hence you would have C drive and a D drive.
Or
2. Did you know you can parition or split up your single hard drive into smaller hard drives. For example, if you have a 20 Gigabyte hard drive, you can split the hard drive into two 10 Gigabyte hard drives. Therefore you would have a C and a D drive.
Or
3. The D drive could also be your CD rom drive.
From what you have asked I would imagine the D drive is your cd rom drive. The easiest way to find out is to put a cd in the cd rom drive and double click the D drive. What happens? Do you see files from the cd or something else?

All storage devices like Floppy, Hard Disk, CD-ROM, USB storage devices are identified by a drive letter in windows ...
Floppy drives are having fixed drive letters A: and B:.
The Hard Disk drives starts from C:....
A hard disk can be divided into different partitions (called Logical Volumes). The first partition of the hard disk is C:, the second partition is D: and the third is E: .... vice versa ...
Windows Operating System stores the system files, installed softwares under C: (default)
You can save anything you want in D: or any other drive...
The drive letters of other storage devices is depends upon the number of partitions you have on your hard disk. If you have two partitions in your hard disk (C:,D:), the drive letter of your CD-ROM will be E:

The D drive is just like any other drive its just a name. Everyone says CD because taht is the most common name for the CD drive but i could, if i wanted, name my hard drive, which is normally the C drive, the D drive and name my cd drive, Drive C or drive Z if i wanted. SO it is just the most common name for the "*master* cd drive
