also are you familiar with emo music and if so do you think it plays a roll in young suicides/self-mutilation?

You gotta be kidding me. Go listen to some rap albums that glorify sluts, gangs, drugs, murder, and rape. Those are the records that should be outlawed.

I hate emo music because I think it trivializes serious problems and makes them seem "trendy", but I don't think it is actually dangerous. It's no wonder why so many kids are depressed - adults and the media focus on the music people listen to, and overlook the depressed kids who don't fit the "emo" stereotype. You have to understand cause and effect - kids who like violent or depressing music might like the music because it reflects their feelings - the music doesn't make them violent or depressed in the first place, and music has a different effect on everything.

If you're interested in finding out what is the root cause of violence in teenagers, look at trends in society, bullying, parental involvement, that sort of thing. Personally, I believe that some kids are just born violent, but society allows them to become violent by being too lenient on "bad" children, and allowing them to bully others. But the majority of troubled kids are not psychopaths.

Bullsh*t!!!

There is exactly ONE thing that encourages bad behavior in children: Bad parenting/lack of discipline.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's during the time when all of the different genres of heavy metal, hard rock, punk rock, rap/hip-hop, and new wave music made their appearance. This entire time period was characterized by increasingly "violent" and/or "suggestive" lyrical content in music. I also grew up during a time when video games first came out, and when movies and tv programs were all accused of becoming too violent and/or sexual. I grew up listening to Prince and Van Halen and Queen and hanging out at the arcade and sneaking into R-rated movies. My tree-hugging hippie parents divorced when I was 5 (I'm the oldest). My parents were also extremely strict, established very firm rules about EVERYTHING, and didn't put up with any crap from any of us. We all turned out just fine.

The point is, there's lots of parents out there who shouldn't be parents. And lots of these emo brats are acting out because they aren't getting the necessary parental attention, let alone discipline, at home. Don't blame external sources like music or video games. When kids do stupid stuff, it's usually the parent's fault.

Kids are influenced by what they are attracted to. The music is not the problem; it is their attraction. The real question is, why are kids attracted to violence?

As far as emo goes, there is a cure. Oh yes there is a cure!

Maybe somewhat, but I think it is all in how each individual interprets things.

The kids involved in the Columbine shooting listened to one of my favorite bands - Rammstein (German industrial rock/metal), and said this openly. That offended me a lot because none of their songs are about killing anyone. Some of their songs are about very controvertial things, but for the purpose of taking that subject by the horns and showing how ugly it really is (they have some songs about homo/bisexuality, and about rape, drugs use, etc.)

I listen to Rammstein, and I have no desire to go out killing people. I have several friends who are "Emo" and listen to that music genre, but don't cut themselves or dwell on death.

It's all in the individual and the environment they were raised in.

I think if kids are violent and blame it on the music they're listening to, the kids have far bigger problems than what's playing on their iPods. People choose to blame the music rather than deal with the real issues the kid/person is facing.

i listened to emo, and it didnt actually encourage me to be violent or self mutilate.....i did have problems with my mother....i was pissed off at the world....at my life....this guy death threatened me at school, so i was stressed....really stressed....and cutting myself realised some of the anxiety....but i cant deny that the music kinda fueled those feelings, but they were already there...

know everything fine, the guy apologized, we're buddies, i dont have issues with my mother....i've got inner peace, and still listen to the same music....

so...there's your answer

We can only hope. Emo kids cutting themselves is a Good Thing. Not quite as Good as when they kill themselves, but certainly funnier.

I love rock music! I don't think it makes someone more violent then they already were. I listen to it all the time and I assure you I'm not at all violent.
