These are separate grids of independent electric power. I said independent, but they are interconnected in order to increase the amount of power from one grid to one that is drawing more power than that grid can supply.
This can occur when one grid is in danger of having a power outage because of excessive usage, often when there is a heat wave in an area or grid system.
If all grids are overloaded, nothing can be done and all grids that are drawing excessive power are in dnager of an outage.

I think there are four grids in the US. Not sure if that is correct.
