It could be a gasket or it could be a seal. It really depends on where the oil leak is. If it is coming out from around the valve covers, it is a valve cover gasket and is easy to fix. If is is coming out from around the back of the engine at the bottom, it is probably a rear main bearing seal and that is going to cost you a pile of money because they will have to pull the motor out to change it. The part is cheap, but the labor is high. Another thought about the valve covers. Over time the bolts can sometimes loosen due to vibration, etc. You might just need to tighten them and you will not need a new gasket.

I'm more inclined to agree with D. M., the valve cover gasket is typically cheaper than the oil pan gasket, but typically they'll still run about $10.

But you need to be sure, there are so many gaskets to keep oil in the car, you need to know which one you're replacing.

Could be a valve cover gasket leaking oil. Oil Pan gasket would cost more.

you need to be more specific, where is the oil leaking from, the engine in a pretty big thing. there are allot of gaskets and seals in a typical engine, so give me an area from where the oil is coming from.

I doubt a valve cover gasket is only $3. Possibly a rear or front main seal. They are cheap parts but very expensive to replace because of the labor involved.

Oil leaks can be due to leaks in the oil gasket or the oil seal or even if the cylinder (from where oil is leaking) needs recasing or remounted.

Have it checked from a registered mechanic. Else, you may have a mounting bill!
