I bought a boat with twin 470 series engines and one of them needs some crank work done. Does anyone know of any automotive parts such as bearings and timing gear that interchange with this engine? The engine uses a ford 460 head, piston, and rod, but the main bearings are not 460. Does anything interchange or an I going to have to deal with the leeches at the marine shops? Thanks

Mercruiser offers "long blocks" in their re-manufactured catalog. This might be your best alternative. Also, you will most likely need to upgrade the exhaust manifold/risers on both engines; coolant leakage from the riser gaskets was one of the leading factors of engine problems. Antifreeze from the cooling system would get into the engine oil and cause bearing damage and wrist pin seizure [usually #4 piston]. Contact me if you would like ; I am one of those "leeches" in the marine biz, but have been known to be "sympathetic" while the blood letting was occurring!

The Merc 470 was an I-4 with a custom Merc aluminum block and a single head from a Ford 460 V-8. Valves, springs, etc., (head components) should be interchangeable.

Block parts won't as it is a custom aluminum bit for Mercury. EG: The water pump is on the end of the cam, not belt driven. This was/is a big failure point due to sealing issues which lets coolant into the crankcase.

sounds like you're about to get into a can of worms. the 470 was great in it's day but that day is gone. most of the extra parts have been used, etc. if you want to build one, be sure you can acquire all the parts before spending too much money.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/UyBoi
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Also, talk with some "Machine Shops" in your area that do engine work, like honing cylinders and reworking heads, sometimes they may know some other sources to try.

Call the local Kawasaki dealer and ask for parts they can tell you.
