From the movie 'Highlander':
Kurgan: "I have something to say, it's better to burn out than to fade away"
I beleoive this is true - go out at your peak and people will remember you. You will pass into legend!
Frank Zappa
Jim Morrison
Bill Hicks
Kurt Cobain
John Lennon
Janice Joplin
Billy Joel ( though not dead he quit writing popular music when he was at a peak in 93 and therefore everyone still remembers and loves him in that way)
etc......

Definitely Burn Out.
The only way to go. Fade away says to me: You could have gone Harder in life.

To me "Fade away" implies a long, gradual process; therefore I would assume "burn out" implies fast lane, edginess.
Although I admire several who were "burnt out" or on that path for their courageousness, I'm a scary cat so therefore prefer to "fade to black."

Better to fade away. No one will even know you are gone.

I love Def Leppard. But to answer your question, you gotta burn out.
