You may ask him to define it to you clearly. Because, although some criticisms are good, some may have effect on your personality in the long term. He may criticize a bad "work" but anything more than that is personal.

Just probe. He could really mean it, and is being professional in talking to you about what you did wrong, refraining from criticizing you on a personal level. It means that you are capable of correcting the mistakes, so that he simply points to the errant action.

If you feel it is not sincere when he says "it is not personal", chances are you yourself know of some basis for you to think that it is not "not personal". Maybe recent past interactions between you and the boss could have caused the breakdown.

If your boss is criticizing your work performance with just cause then it may not be personal. Remember, your boss is not your friend, even if your boss is your friend outside of work.

Your boss may like you but you are not doing your job well enough or correctly. Your boss may have problems communicating the problem with you in a way that doesn't seem like it is a personal attack. Or, it may be that you are taking correct and appropriate criticism as a personal attack, perhaps because you identify too much with your job.

Is he attacking you as a person, or your behavior? He should only criticize you on the behavior or task that was performed incorrectly. If your boss is attacking you as a person you have a problem and should seek help from human resources, or your boss's boss. If it bothers you that your boss says 'it's not personal' you should address it with him.

first & very importantly, choose your battles wisely.

as in, confirm within yourself two things: where to draw the line & is it a matter really worth responding to.

then say:
"oh, of course, i know its not personal, but with all due respect ..."
or
"i understand you mean nothing by it, but apart from anything personal, i'm not sure how else it could be taken ... [follow up with your proper rational point on matter]"

well you can't really argue much with the boss unless you really have substantial evidence and if you keep it up you coudl find yourself without job.
