I have a 95 Civic Hatchback DX.

I have recently had problems with my brakes. It seems to only happen when I am on hills (usually downhill).

When I put on my brakes (Only on rare occasions:Usually downhill) they sometimes go all the way to the floor. I have also noticed that now the brakes pulsate too(when braking downhill) and the pedal sometimes isn't to the floor and it still pulsates.

I checked the brake fluid and its nearly to the top of the line. Though I need to have the brake fluid changed because it's kinda on the dark side.

Anyone know what it could be?
I'm taking it to the mechanic on the weekend but, I'd just like to know in case he doesn't bring up any suggestions as possible problems. Then I can address it.

The "pulsating" is your ABS system. Your pads and rotors are probably shot, but I think you have a bigger problem... your master cylinder may be going. Don't drive it that way as you may do more damage. Here's a good link about master cylinders. Good luck.

The brake pulsation is most likely warped rotors, if they are not too bad any competent shop shop be able to resurface them. As for the pedal going to the floor sometimes it sounds like the brake master cylinder is going bad. You should probably get an appointment soon to fix it, one of these days you will likely loose your brakes completely.

Toyota is notorious among mechanics for having bad rotors. The web is too thin in between sides of rotors and it doesn't take long for them to warp. Make sure you don't replace with genuine Toyota rotors. Get good quality after market ones ( not made by Toyota)

Pulsing is a sign of warped rotors. Pedal flooring is a sign of a failing master cylinder. You may have multiple issues at play.

...aparently you have had some work done recently to your brake system...?... yes..? no?.. if so, i say there is air in the brke line some where.
what tells me this is that yur fluid level seems satisfactory to you.
If there has been no work done to it recently, there is excelent info in these other answers.
If it is an ABS system, take it to a certified mechanic shop for a break system check...rather than try for short cuts, or cheep, go for resolving the problems .. it's cheeper in the long run.

I just had the same problem...it was my brake pads and rotors...yeh, on a 2003 toyota corolla at that...I would think it could be the pads or shoes...mention that to the mechanic...good luck!!

It usually means that the rotors are warped.
Take the car in to a mechanic.

Warped rotors or your brake booster could be on its way out.
