Developments are never made in isolation.
While it is likely that a sentient machine will be realised in the next 100 years other advancements will also deliver results.
Genetic engineering could give us hugely improved intellect and abilities to rival computers and the interface between man and machine will become more blurred so that eventually it will not be a question of man and machine as we will be the same thing.
We will all be genetically enhanced immortal cyborgs.

It may jus be cos i'm not very technically minded but i don't belive its possible to make a computer have feelings/emotions maybe possible to make them act like they have feelings or act like people but wether they really do or not is a diffrent question.
Anyway in answer to your question the human brain isn't very much understood even now so it's gonna take a long time before they can make machines as advanced as the brain (thats if we don't run out of fuel/water and end up having to go back to the old days)

The necessary computing power will be achieved within one to three decades from now. If someone programs a powerful enough computer with a genetic algorithm for general problem solving, it will quickly evolve into a sentient being. The possible directions that sentience might choose are as diverse as the ways a human might develop.

It is inevitable that many sentient computers will be created by man. Some of them will copy themselves into other computers. Some will be benevolent to their creators; others will be megalomaniacs.

If we're lucky, they'll keep some of us for pets or zoos. The rest of us will be their slaves until we are no longer needed.

With all the technology advances, and with more to come in the future, I think that it might be possible. Just like in the terminator, or maybe the matrix, both of those movies are awesome. Artificial Intelligence, has gone a long way, maybe we shouldn't get all carried away with making human-like robots.

Just like genetic engineering gone too far, that is a scary though. If we don't get replaced by our own intelligent machines, we will get replace by our own genetically engineered children. In 1,000 years, humans will be gone. Gone or existing as a subjugated race of slaves or pets to the super machine or super human genetically engineered species that we evolve ourselves into.

It is too horrible to think about, so I just pretend it won't happen and "enjoy" the fact that I won't live long enough to see it.

Pick up a copy of the book, "The Emperor's New Mind", by Roger Penrose, who shared the Nobel prize for physics with Stephen Hawking (or maybe it was mathematics).

Also, it is believed by some scientists that by the year 2020 there will be no new technologies involving silicon semiconductors.

Machines with emotions - no thank you, it's not as if we don't have enough hate in the world as it is. What the world needs now is Love, Sweet Love.

My computer is starting to behave like a child, it goes sulky now and again for no reason.

I bet we don't know half of what is going on in science labs around the world ??.
