Unless you are recording the activity that is happening on your computer, ie That YOU own, then yes it is quite illegal.
For example if you are at your boyfriends house and you read through his emails, although it would be cumbersome, he could sue you.

it is a federal offense that carries jail time, but looking at a family members emails on a shared computer is a little difficult to convict on, unless its proved you hacked their password to access their account, companies routinely check employees work email accounts and computers for inappropriate behavior.
