More and more republicans are turning against him now. Is he now a lame duck? Will he be able to get anything meaningful done in his 1 & 1/2 years left?

Technically, he became a lame duck once he was re-elected to a second term.

His ability to lead was under question BEFORE the 2004 election, but there were so many true-believers that could not or would not question his authority.

Well, you know, they say that the masses are asses.

If "W" expects to get anything done, it will be through compromise.
And that is a word which is foreign to Bush and his team...and sadly, for many Americans who are ideologues.

the congress knows what they are doing, they don't let the President get anything done, and then they politicize how nothing is getting done when it's some of them preventing it. That's Dems for ya. I really do agree almost every 2 term president struggles after year 5 or 6, it's like a starting pitcher they can only go so long. I also agree Congress & the House are just as bad if not worse, by making every situation worse than it has to be. The Dems in Congress & the House are so partisan I think I would shoot them down too, and give them a taste of their own medicene, by vetoing things, especially things like Stem Cell, I'm not sure of my opinon, on it but there are other alternatives they have mentioned.

for the next 1&1/2 years of his term, he might not achieve much

I think that it is clear that Bush can't do anything now. Everybody knows he sucks and everyone knows the situation in Iraq sucks. He has no credibility and he is continuing to distance himself from the people aqnd other government officials by refusing to cooperate with the investigation of Gonzales, vetoing stem cell research bills that have passed both houses of congress and every other decision he makes. All he will do is make things worse for the next year and a half. **** BUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he should just keep working on what he is doing... the Immigration plan fell through so now he should just go forward with his budgeting plans...
why do Presidents' always lose control after the first term? I think he is toast politically, he needs to just put in his time and try to stay faithful to his party.
The damage has been done , why make it any worse?

He is still a dangerous "leader" and it is true that his dear republicans are distancing themselves from him and his administration. Yes, he is a lame-duck president and he has been one since the elections in 2006!
