Will I need jeans and a sweatshirt? Can I wear shorts and a golf shirt?

Both. Early September is still summer. Temps can get to high 80's and low 90's. By the end of Sep it starts to get cold. We have had snow as early as Oct 12, several years ago.

That is such an impossible question, I don't know how to answer. Pittsburgh gets nutty weather, and September's a pretty bad month. It can be snowing, or it can be ninety. I'd err on the side of cooler, but not cold. Layers are your friend. Wear a t-shirt and have something to put over it, like a hoodie or long sleeved shirt. Bring an umbrella. We can get a lot of rain then, particularly if the hurricane season's an active one.

Although temperatures can be pretty drastic here, shorts and a golf shirt should work unless its late September, then you might want to bring along a pair of jeans just in case.
