The third picture does look like a cross-over, if you were holding both connectors with the lock clip facing the same way. With the clip away from you one end should have an orange cable in pin 2 (second from left) and the other should have a green cable at number 2. A straight cable connected correctly would have the orange on both at 2. Also most (not all) bought cross-over cables have cross-over or xover marked on the sleeving at intervals now.

Your camera has it's own USB cable. Why do you think you need a cross-over Ethernet cable? BTW, most modern PC's don't even need them.

Please re-post and describe your specific problem, with program name and error messages (if applicable) and a description of your PC and operating system.

If your machine hasn't completely given up the ghost, reboot the darned thing to see if you can re-create the problem, taking careful notes on everything you do along the way. Write down any error messages you encounter and don't leave out any of the "technogobbledygook".

Even better, capture a low-res screenshot of every error message you get. If you don't already have a favorite screen-capture program (like MWSnap), use the one inside Windows:

Press Shift+Print Screen to capture the current window, open Windows Paint, select Edit > Paste, then save the screen in your documents folder with a descriptive title, such as "Error message when trying to access My Documents.jpg."

That way, you can refer back to the screen, if necessary, OR send us a link so we can see for it ourselves.

Then, we can try to help.

When looking at the cable you have to look at the wire inside the connector. If both sides are
orange-white
orange
green-white
blue
blue-white
green
brown-white
brown

then it is a standard cable

If the Blues and Browns are swithed it is a cross over cable. See the reference for other cabling versions.
