You might try Sterling, Dillon, Ouray (one of my favorite spots in CO), Grand Lake, Golden, or Idaho Springs for a range of places to start.

Longmont and Loveland are second tier towns in Colorado. But you will be close to Boulder, Fort Collins, and Denver which are definitely fun towns. Don't get me wrong, Longmont and Loveland are nice, they just don't have a lot going on culturally because of the lack of a major university. Colorado gets over 300 days of sunshine a year and, along the front range, you can experience mild temperatures in the dead of winter. Of course, you'll still see the occasional blizzard from time to time.

Monument is a small town just north of Colorado Springs. Ft. Collins is a lovely town north of Denver. Grand Junction is on the western side of the mountains. Alamosa is in the south-central mountains. I have put websites below for you to see. I lived in Colorado Springs for over 25 years and love it, but it is getting very large, and expensive. These other towns are great and smaller.

i lived in several places in colorado for 35 years and had to leave because it got too expensive. so i don't know what you mean by " not too pricey" . but forget the eastern slope. check chambers of commerce on the western slope. glenwood springs is beautiful, small and safe.
