I made a bet with my friend. OK so here it is. I said rattlesnakes are more poisonous than adult ones because their venom is more focused. My friend thought that when theh bite, they just hold on to your hand and don't let go. What do you think?

Baby rattlers are a LOT safer to work with than adults. The ONLY thing about baby snakes is that they tend to inject venom more often, while adults often deliver 'dry' bites in defense instead of wasting valuable venom.

In the wild, you will almost NEVER see a baby rattler because they hide as hard as they can because everything on Earth eats them! They are small, tasty, and pretty defenseless if you know what you are doing.

The toxicity of the venom for adults and baby rattlers is about the same. It is not more focused or more pure.

Babies have a MUCH smaller total amount of venom, so can never inject as much as an adult can. Babies also have smaller fangs. A fang about 1/4" long is not a big threat.

No rattler will intentionally strike and hold- that would damage the all-important fangs and usually cost them their lives.

The whole 'babies are more dangerous than adults' bit is an absolute myth.

Baby rattlesnakes are more poisonous than the adult ones, because the baby rattlesnake are still too young to know how to work their bite, so when they bite it injects all of their venom into their prey. It's not just the whole thing of them holding onto your hand for a while because it doesn't take that long to inject all of their venom. I know because I live out in the middle of no where and we get rattle snakes out in our sage brush.

The truth about this question is that a newborn or young rattler is much more likely to bite than an adult because they are prey items for many, many creatures & will strike in self defense if exposed to what they perceive as danger, whereas an adult may just try to escape rather than striking. The baby doesn't have the volume of venom that an adult snake carries, but it's just as destructive to human tissue. All in all , the adult is more of a threat, but the baby is more likely to bite. These snakes usually don't hang on unless their fangs become caught in your clothing.

actually adult snakes are able to administer a "dry" bite. That is a bite without the use of venom. Young snakes are not able to do this ,so they inject all the venom they can when they bite.
