I recently saw a group of 6 flying in the northern part of the CITY. Shouldn't they live outside the city, in the outskirts, or rural areas?

I live in Tampa and during the winter months every year dozens of turkey vultures start hanging around on the tallest buildings downtown, and don't disperse until spring. I don't know why, but they seem to be right at home. Some of them also have lost their fear enough to eat road kill with cars going by a few feet away. I think that's a good thing as long as they don't get hit themselves and make more of a mess than they are cleaning up!

As we enroach on their native territory, they have a choice - they either push back farther and farther from human civilization, or they learn to coexist.

Also, vultures (these are probably turkey vultures) fly in big wide arcs high in the sky, looking for carcasses. They could easily just drift over the city. Or, possibly, they were attracted by the scent of something dying - turkey vultures are one of the few birds with an acute sense of smell, and they could have come from a long way away.

Naw -- vultures love to surf the thermals -- and cities are great for that. They will go wherever they can find hot air and road kill. If there is a water tower anywhere around, they will roost there, too. They won't NEST in the city -- but just hang out.

Oh cities are wonderful places for vultures as they are scavengers. The don't eat just dead animals (which cities have plenty of) but trash. They are like any animal and adapt to where the food is.
