It really all depends on the motherboard you have.
Some motherboards have the capability to run ram in what is called "Dual Channel" mode, which effectively doubles the data transfer rate of the memory. Giving you increased performance.
But, it only works if the board supports it, and the memory is of the same size and speed. If the board does not, you would be better off with the 1gig and the 512.

Hey,
There is what is called Dual Channel memory. When two Dual Channel capable RAM sticks are paired, it improves performance. If you have just one Dual Channel RAM stick, it will not improve performance unless it is grouped with another one of the same kind. So, yes, there is truth to it, you just have to make sure you have the right kind together.

Brandon

On some motherboards with the ram in particular combinations of slots you can get as much as twice the speed, this is not true for all boards. Even then you need the 2 ram cards to match in size, and this is not a substitute for more memory.

Maybe if you are using Duel channel, but even then I find that hard to believe. If that were the case gamers would split their RAM as an alternative to max'ing their RAM out.

Maybe, but negligible. I have a 1GB and a 512MB mixed in both of my PC's (desktop and laptop), and all I noticed was a SIGNIFICANT improvement in performance, especially since I use a lot of graphics programs.

Well, if you have one stick of 1GB and one stick of 512MB, that equals 1.5GB. But, if you have the two 512MB sticks, that only equals 1GB. So, the first option is better since you will have more RAM.

The sticks don't matter as long as they are the same speed
and more ram is always better than less!

Well I would think 1GB and a 512MB would be better because that is more memory.
