So... My paycheck with [hours x Pay-per-hour] would equal 800.00, however once taxes are all taken out I end up getting 571.00. So, what PERCENT of my check goes toward taxes?
I'm sure this is ridiculously easy to figure out, but I'm not quite sure how to do it? Help!! ;)

800-571=229. This is how much you paid in taxes.
229/800*100=28.625% This is the percent that goes to taxes.

It's (800 - 571) / 800 * 100
= 28.625%
28.625% in taxes. And people ask me if I feel guilty about cheating on my taxes.

Let us assume that x% of 800, i.e., 800x / 100, is paid as tax. Hence,
Original amount - Tax on original amount = 571
i.e., 800 - 800x / 100 = 571
i.e., 800 - 571 = 800x / 100
i.e., 229 = 800x / 100
i.e., 229 * 100 = 800x
i.e., 22900 = 800x
i.e., 22900 / 800 = x
i.e., 28.625 = x
Hence, 28.625% is paid as tax.

Net = 571/800 = 71.4%, so 100% - 71.4% = 28.6% goes to taxes.
Alternatively, 800 - 571 = 229 in taxes, so 229/800 = 28.6% to taxes.

Magic formula for solving all "percent" problems: Translate the words in the problem according to these rules:
* When you see "what" or "how much," write a variable "X" (this is the number you're trying to figure out);
* When you see "is", write "="
* When you see "percent" or "%", write "/100" (i.e., divided by 100);
* When you see "of", write a multiplication sign.
You're having 229.00 deducted. So your question is:
"229 is how many percent of 800?"
Translation (according to above rules):
229 = X/100 · 800
Use algebra to rearrange it like this:
X = (229 · 100) / 800
X = 28.625
They're taking 28.625% of your check.

571/800 = 0.71375 or 71%
Your net pay(take home) is 71% of your gross pay(total earned), so you paid 29% in taxes, FICA, etc.
