It depends on the airline...on Continental airline's website I found out that if you are in the:

Economy class, you can have either 2 checked bags weighing maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) each bag or 2 boxes instead of the 2 checked bags weighing maximum 50 lbs (23 kg) each box

OnePass Elite Members Economy Class, you can have either 2 checked bags weighing maximum 70 lbs (32 kg) each bag or 2 boxes instead of the 2 checked bags weighing maximum 70 lbs (32 kg) each box

First class/ Business class, you can have either 3 checked bags weighing maximum 70 lbs (32 kg) each bag or 3 boxes instead of the 3 checked bags weighing maximum 70 lbs (32 kg) each box

Here's the website that I got this information from:

http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/check.aspx

This is only for continental airlines, I'm not sure if it applies to other airlines, it is best to check with your airline either online (website) or by phone or check with your travel agent

Good luck moving!

I would recommend you repacking things and just taking your valuables on your flight and whatever necessities you will need to tie you over while at the same time staying below the maximum allowed baggage and weight of each. You might even want to borrow or buy a good scale.

In doing so, find or buy sturdy good sized packing boxes and plan on shipping them via United Parcel Service (UPS Brown) to the New York address where you will be living. If you don't have one, you could either have someone you trust hold the shipment/mailing at your destination or maybe ship them to your work address.

FYI we went through a similar drill when our oldest son took a job and moved to Europe. We literally packed everything he owned and was planning to take into about 8 empty Dell desktop computer boxes, put them into our Toyota Sienna minivan and hauled them to a Freight Handler who shipped them to Europe.

FYI what I mentioned about getting hold of an accurate scale was based on what actually happened in front of the airline ticket counter when we took oldest son to International Airport watching people unpack their luggage trying to resort their suitcases to stay within the airline weight restrictions etc

Best of Luck!

Yes, you are well within the limit....(i'm using my measurement converter)

Well.....40 kg is 88 lbs. so you're well over the 50 lbs. limit.....Now the 50 lbs. limit is the limit where bags are taken for free....you go over, you'll probably have to be paying 50 USD

Just to let you know.....50 lbs. is approximately 22 kgs....
