Fantasy novels often have a common theme: elves, dwarves, goblins, giants, trolls, and man. Many of the successful novel series have taken this this classic fantasy style. However, that seems quite unoriginal. If you could write a fantasy novel, would you use this classic theme, or would you create your own original world with original species? What would you like to write about?

I'll add that I didn't mean to limit it to just about other species. It can be about anything, anyone, anywhere. It can be about ordinary people in a small town somewhere, but with fantasy aspects. Really, anything.

Really, any method would be fine.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with using the classic fantasy theme. The only problem is that you're going to have to put your own original twist on it and make it interesting, unlike anything else that uses the classic theme. It might require a little more thinking, but if you really use your imagination, you could be able to pull it off.

Well, speaking of imagination, that leads me to my next point. The more original you are, the better. However, creating your own world and species and starting from scratch would take a long time and can sometimes be frustrating. But then again, you have the rewards of being recognized as an original author to look at.

If it were me, I would probably mix up my themes. I would throw in some of the classic fantasy creatures (just to stick to that element of fantasy), but make them special--in other words, give them characteristics that other creatures of their kind in other worlds don't have. Maybe your elves don't have to be graceful or immortal, and maybe your dwarves don't rough, tough, mountain-dwelling creatures.
But, at the same time, I would make a few of my own races to show that I do have the ability to be original, and that I am a creative person. Creating your own species can be fun, anyway.

Well, I hope this answered your question! =)

Theme in most cases is separate for setting and character type. Some generic fictional themes include renewal of hope, redemption, internal strength, love’s mysterious ways, deception for fun and profit, or the symbolism of certain colors or shapes. When you sit down to write a piece of fiction, you might have these kinds of themes in mind or you might not. In fact, it’s most likely that you’ll discover a theme while you’re revising the first draft. Once you can see it, you can elaborate on it, and really tighten up the story line.

As far as you setting and character types go it is very time consuming to pull off a new world and new creature type story. Look at the immense detail Tolkien went into to create his world.

Here are just a few thing which must be considered:

Number of races,
Countries,
Physical characteristics of all races
Back story for all races,
Languages
History,
Other settings/worlds
Myths,

I am not trying to discourage you but you are in for a long haul if you choose this route.

If I were to write a fantasy novel it would contain human characters set in the future. This way it somewhat narrows the responsibility to setting alone.

Why does fantasy have to be about other species and why can’t it be based on normal human being.

If I ever wrote a fantasy book, it will be based on the society that we live in with the people who are around us, but there will be someone, who possess some sort of a mind power and has control over something strange. I know that this topic has been covered many many times as well, but if you really apply some thought into it then for sure it can be turned to an amazing work.

The power doesn’t have to be anything supernatural. Just make it like a communication to other’s subconscious mind without their notice.
