Very rarely has it been contracted via bodily fluids but it can.

OMG - First I believe the shots are down to three.

Second you don't have to wait years for symptoms. 7-10 days. If an animal (dog in general) bites you it must be quarantined for ten days for observation. Specifically in case it was infected rshortly before it bit you. There is no test for rabies until after death. They test breain tissue for the disease. Yes the skull must be cut off the animal in order to find out if it had rabies.

Rabies is spread by saliva getting in contact with blood. Biting is pretty much the only way, other than an infected animal/person sneezing or spitting in someone's wound!

Rabid animals become much more likely to bite once they are symptomatic, due to the neurlogical symptoms. Even a wild animal will actually come up to a person to attack.

The first answerer is being silly by the way. There is NO CURE for rabies once symptoms are present - the only possible way of escaping rabies if you have been infected is by very prompt treatment involving cleaning of the wound and anti rabies injections (vaccines). Once bitten, symptoms can take weeks to years to appear, depending on how long the virus takes to get into the nervous system. Where the person has been bitten will have an effect on how long this takes.

Any contact with saliva can transmit rabies, in rare cases people have caught it through transplant surgery.
