and then sends you another one for a business you no longer own , do you have to pay. Around a year ago they sent me a final bill and said it was the last one and they confirmed it was . Nowaround a year later they sent me another one and when i rang to complain they said i had to pay it even though i don't own the business and i have been told there wouldn't be more. Can they be taken to court , what can i do?

U need to know whether do u have any certificate or notice or letter stating that u no longer own the business and who is owning them at the moment. U need document such as transfer of ownership letter etc. As long u can prove in court that you are no longer the legal owner then u do not need to pay for any bills whatsoever. Even if they take u to court, u will win the case and trust me, seldom company will wish to bring u to court for a petty sum.

I can only assume you are talking to a call centre when you phone them ask to speak to a manager and refuse to take a call back. If this doesn't work then let them take you to court. Remember you must have all your documentation of when you left the business and just make sure that the bill you paid covers you until the date you left the property not before. Some water companies have out sourced the debt side and the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Just double check all the dates to make sure you were paid up to date. Also make a list of all the times you phone as you should also get compo for the calls as well.

Do you have to pay is an open ended question. If you are a sole proprietor then you would owe the money the business owes. If a corporation you would not be on the hook unless you signed a personal guarantee. They can ask you for money and you can choose not to pay it but you then face the risk of having this put on your credit bureau and/or sued for the debt. Fixing these items are problematic and it is better to deal with before rather than after,

You need to know what the statutes of limitations are in your state. You need to know what your contractual agreement is with them.

I agree with Wingshooter08. Let them take you to court. Do you still have all the correspondance from the 1st time and proof that you no longer own the busines? Gather all that together and just wait. Dont call them or anything; just wait to be served. Make sure you have your ducks in a row, and you should be ok.

you need to look at the bill you had before you stopped trading check the dates on the bill if you had paid for longer than you were trading then no . but if you had not left the place you were trading then yes you would have to pay. but check your bill and if you think you are right have a word with the cab

They probably can do that because you did not get it in writing. Also, you didn't state here that you terminated their services in writing. I suggest you pay it because litigation would cost a LOT more than the bill itself. Also, send a certified letter terminating their services.
