I have a sony external dvd burner connected to my laptop because the burner on my laptop is messing up. Everytime I play a cd the sound has static and even dowloads it onto my itunes. I know it is not my cds cause they are brand new. How can i fix this without spending alot of money to have it checked out.

You may want to check your connection. Try plugging in the connection into another port. If that does not work, replace the cord with a high end cord.

Also, try to purchase something to clean the optical drive. (Compressed air, or an actual cleaning disk that can be inserted into the tray.) The static may be caused by dust on the lens.

Last but not least, make sure that the laptop is plugged in to a socket that is not running something else on it. The static may be interference on the power grid, caused by the refridgerator running in the next room.

It sounds like you either need a new sound card or better speakers. Are you using the internal speakers or external ones? I find external ones are better...also if your CD has a lot of bass to it with crappy speakers...the sound will always be bad.
