I work at a high school in CT and we have all our students submit a resume along with applications. This resume shows all extracurriculars or community service you have done, as well as any jobs you have had. It may be a good way to show yourself. Also, some people get very creative with college applications. My music teacher in high school was very proud of one of his students who went to Brown University. He recorded an 8 part harmony song to send along with his application and he got in!!! He didn't even end up majoring in music.

Here's what I did. As others have mentioned, I gave my teachers that were writing recommendations a list of my extracurriculars.

Also: I added a "college resume" to all of my applications. Here, list all your extracurriculars, volunteer work, awards... Anything you want to 'brag' about to get their attention.

If they don't ask directly on the application, then talk to your teachers. It's difficult for a teacher to write a lot about you if they don't know about your aspirations for college and the future and what you do outside of class. Some colleges and scholarship applications will accept letters of recommendation from coaches, mentors, and church leaders. I had my theatre coach and musical director write one, my choir teacher write one, and my yearbook class advisor write another. They were all great. Just make sure you pick the right people that know you or are willing to talk.
Good luck.

Give your teachers who will be writing the recommendations a resume that lists all your accomplisments including your extracurriculars. A lot of times, those reccomending you will run out of material to write about. So this will give them stuff to write about. They will most likely work it into their reccomendations.

Tell them what you did. IT is generally verifyable through the school.

Show them is even better. Send copies of Mastheads, for example, with your name on it.
