I have just bought a female Russian Tortiose from a Petco. Is Petco trust worthy? Tell me what your experience are. Thank You!

Whether or not a store is trustworthy really depends on the location when you're talking about a chain; my local Petco may be totally different from yours. That's one thing to keep in mind.

Reptiles is really where you mostly hear about about salmonella from; though turtles can certainly carry it too, good thinking to ask. Any turtle could carry it. In fact that's why they aren't allowed to sell baby turtles under 4" of size. They're more likely to carry it (or easier to pick it up from). As long as your turtle is larger than 4" (though there are exceptions, like musk turtles who only get about 2" hehe), then it should be fine.

Just remember to always use regular good hygiene practices, including washing or sanitizing your hands if you handle the turtle, or clean the tank.

Any animal that routinely comes in contact with feces can carry Salmonella- cats scratching in their litter box, aquatic frogs, etc. The reasons turtles get a bad rap is most other aquatic animals are not routinely held by children.

Tortoises can carry Salmonella, but usually do not.

Salmonella really is not a big deal- it is the '24 hour bug' or 'stomach flu'- a short bout of vomiting and diarrhea with few lingering effects.

Even if you have a dozen water turtles, you are more likely to get it from badly stored, cooked, or prepared food.

Wash your hands, and clean surfaces people or food touch, and you should be fine.

All of them., for that reason is not a good idea to have them as pets, young children must waSH THEIR HANDS INMEDIATLY AFTER TOUCH THEM !
Reptiles are particularly likely to harbor Salmonella and people should always wash their hands immediately after handling a reptile, even if the reptile is healthy.

So the best you can do is not to buy them , couse your house it is not theirs !

If you have pets like this, please go to a vet to prevent illness, and to know more about their care.
ThanXs !

Looks like many species carry it, often with no symptoms. Iguana is specified in Morbidity Journal.

Why do you want a pet tortoise?
