I prefer hopeful themes and endings which, if not happy, are not dark. My murder mystery series (MURDER IN EXILE, St. Martin's Press 2006 and REDUCED CIRCUMSTANCES St. Martin's Press July 10, 2007) involves an amateur sleuth named Frank Cole who has had a few hard knocks but keeps on trying anyway. Frank was financially ruined in a bankruptcy, and moved from the northeast to the Florida panhandle to restart his life. Working as a lowly fact-checker, he stumbles across a murder while reviewing a hit-and-run that was no accident. Although Frank's current situation is pretty bleak, he encounters helpful people in his new home of Exile, Florida, and his own perseverance sends a strong, positive message about dealing with adversity. Feel free to read the sample chapters at my website, www.vincenthoneil.com. I hope this answered your question.
