Not until you are 18 years of age or are emancipated. However, they can seize your entire wages because you aren't technically old enough to manage your own assets. Its a catch-22.

All these people are right about the drop in the bucket thing.

My parents charged me half of every paycheck, as soon as I got my first one. I have not has so cheap an arangement for room and board since. They can't actually throw you out of the house for non-payment of rent until you are of age, but that does not mean that they can't enforce payment. If it is a bad deal, rent from someone else.

If they do not take at least half of your paycheck, put that difference in the bank anyway. You will need a couple months worth of income to get out on your own when the time comes. As seasonal as some of BC is, you may need more, to be secure in your housing and all.

Be grateful that your parents are there for you, that you live indoors, and that they care enough to teach you to pull your own weight. It is astounding how many young people do not know how to do this, and end up in serious hardship when their parents are not there to catch them.

If you're over 18 and living at home, I would'nt worry about it. My parents did as do most parents. Charging you rent is just a drop in the bucket to repay them for all they have done for you.

Yes. And the mature thing to do would be to pay it, while you save for a place of your own. Housing costs a lot, and you aren't entitled to a free ride once you're 18 or in school.

I can't imagine why not. You're part of the family, making an income, and they're asking you to contribute to the upkeep of the household. As long as they aren't asking more than, say, 25-50% of your wages (depending upon their economic situation), I don't see any problem.

I would think it isn't ethical unless you are an ungrateful child or they are saving it for your future to teach you responsibility. If you ask me, that would discourage me from working. It is hard enough as it is for a teenager to afford their own vehicle with high insurance rates plus having to pay their parents rent.

It's perfectly legal once you're over 18.
