The Apocalypse that is expected to happen around 2012 shall be one without a parallel! In the history of mankind it is 3600 years after... mankind shall again witness horrors of the fury of nature. The abysmally low trust amongst human beings... most human beings behaving worse than animals led to the deterioration in values that mankind stood for! Such happenings in the mortal world are unacceptable to God Almighty.
In the circumstances... it is God Almighty who himself takes the lead! A normal human being shall inherit such phenomenal supernatural powers that mankind would term him as an Avatar of the era (God manifest in human form). The advent of Bhagwan Kalki is awaited with abated breath... but the coming of an Avatar is beset with a war that re-establishes Dharma and roots out adharma forever... the first and final war... a fight to the finish between Christianity and Islamic Dharma!
The fury of world war 3 can be gauged from the fact that increase in global temperatures world over (in the aftermath of world war 3) would result in heavy melting of icecaps leading to rise of sea waters by 10 to 12 feet. This massive rise in the level of sea waters results in 1000 feet high waves becoming common! All coastal belts world over would be wiped clean for about 30 kilometers inroads. Continents like Australia would be almost wiped off the world map. More than one third of UK would submerge underwater.
All is the result of a karma that cannot err! As we have practiced since long... accordingly is our future! Those who have a tainted background need fear most. Those with a sunny disposition and godly thinking need not fear God and his ways! Almost 1200 million people shall perish in the worst tragedy the present millennium shall witness! A full-scale nuclear war... there shall not be respite for one... even those who do not partake!
The best part of the present Apocalypse is... the world shall witness the dawn of a new era in 2014... The golden era! A complete change in the thinking pattern of mankind would result! Pots of gold lying hither and thither would not have a claimant! The superficial glare these pieces of metal carried would come to roost! It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. When the superpowers square off against each other in two camps, then come back and we'll talk apacolpse.
Until then, just think regional conflicts, wars between rump states, proxy wars and brinksmanship. If you recall the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a coalition of Arab States (Egypt, Syria and Jordan) were soundly defeated by the Israelis. That was a worse situation than the current conflict and it didn't raise a blip on the world war radar (not that it didn't have the potential to spark a global war).
The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.
Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask when is the apacolypse, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.
Our biggest risk is an accidental launch of nukes by one of the nuclear powers.

Define Apocalypse.
If it means the end of the human race followed by the second coming of Christ, no.
If it means the end of the human race, maybe... but probably not.
If it means the end of the planet Earth, yes, eventually it will die.

As we so dependent on our Sun, when it dies so will Earth.
Of course there are other calamities that could befall us before that.
All of these could be termed "apocalyptic".
