Well, I wouldn't say that it's an immigrant thing. Besides, I've seen a lot of Americans using an umbrella in the sun. Light skin can be sun burned easily; it has nothing to do with culture.

No it's not too immigrant-like -- I'm Caucasian with very very fair skin and I have two parasols (sun umbrellas)..I got one from a store called Asian Treasures and it looks kinda like the little umbrellas people put in their drinks, and then I bought one from Sara's Parasols (which is an online store) which looks more like the ones used in the early 1900s...Anyhow, I use either one when I'm going to be outside during peak sun light hours and very recently, I took it to an all day festival and because of it I didn't even get sun burn or tanned -- I'm so happy about that, fair skin is beautiful!! Plus, I got loads of compliments from people who thought it was pretty!!

What is wrong with that? Asians, especially those from locales further north (Japan, Korea etc.) have skin that is even more fair than Caucasians. Besides, as long as it's not hurting anyone, no one else should mind.
I would hold an umbrella for a cute asian lady most any day!
(So maybe it would look silly, but is it bad/wrong, of course not)

Some use umbrellas to not get darker or to have the sun away from their face. I am black and I use an umbrella from the sun because the sun burns(I'm not talking about getting darker) me when I forget to put sun screen on.

no i see more then just asian people doing that, i think it actually started with upper class women probably british in the late 1800's i just assumed it had something to do with keeping the sun out of there eye's and maybe they dont want to damage there skin? i never thought of it as strange, are we still at that place???

Does it really matter. I lived in Hawaii and had a lot of Chinese and Japanese friends there. They explained to me that having lighter skin meant that they didn't have to work hard in the fields like the poorer people. It's kind of like Americans flocking to get tans as a sign of wealth in that we don't have to sit behind a desk all day, to them light skin means they don't have to work hard in the fields all day. Or at least that's how it was explained to me.

I find the fear of getting dark and looking like "peasants" or farmers to be kind of odd since few asians work on farms in my area, but whatever.
