I think it's the printing press, because it mades possible the accumulation and dissemination of information in a way that wasn't possible before.
But the personal computer may turn out to be an even greater invention, for the same reason. We will know better when looking back after a couple hundred years.
I also think democracy is a great invention, the idea that people have rights and can govern themselves. It's not working the greatest for us here in the US at the moment, but that's because we're not doing it right.

The integrated circuit - the IC is the primary reason that computers could be made small and inexpensive enough for the general public. This answer, this website and this internet would simply not exist without them. The IC is still a relatively new invention having only been around for 50 or so years, and its impact has been extraordinary. As a culture, we haven't even begun to see whats possible with this technology.
